Why Screws sometimes break in Multi-unit Dental Implant

Screw breakage in a Multi-unit Implants may be due to multiple reasons, like:

• Improper Torque: Care needs to be taken while tightening the screw over the implant. It has to be tightened with prescribed torque and not over tightened; else the screw may get fractured due to concentration of excessive pressure at one single point.

• Improper Screw Selection: The size or the length of the screw has to be perfect. Too long a screw may bottom out in the implant body and may break due to stress concentration. Too short screw may lead to lack of stability causing failure.

• Misfit or Misalignment: Improper fit or misalignment of the screw with the implant components may cause too much concentration of stress leading to fracture.

• Improper Implant Placement: If the angle or the placement of the implant or the abutment is not precise, the screw may bear uneven stress concentration which can result in its failure.

• Occlusal Issues: Issues like malocclusions, improper bite positions and even bruxism can put excessive stress concentration on the screw. Other factor is too much of overloading on the implant like biting or chewing very hard material, over a period of time puts undue pressure on the implant. All or any of these factors may cause screw failure.

• Corrosion Or Wear & Tear: Although the screws are made of Titanium, which is a “Biocompatible” material having “Anti-Corrosive” quality, improper oral hygiene and regular consumption of acidic products may sometimes lead to corrosion or wear & tear of the screw, which may cause screw failure.
