A “Closed Tray Impression” which is a plastic or metal device is a commonly used technique to obtain an accurate and a precise impression of the dental implant fixture or implant abutment along-with its surrounding structures in order to fabricate the final prosthesis.
Under this technique, impression post or transfer coping is attached to the implant before taking the impression. A dental impression material is loaded in the Closed Impression Tray, for taking the impression. The tray is carefully inserted into the mouth, & after having ensured that it is properly seated on the teeth and the transfer coping is fully engaged, the patient has to give a gentle but a firm bite so that the impression material sets all over the teeth and transfer copings.
Next, the Closed Tray is carefully removed along with the transfer coping which remains inside the transfer material. After examining & ensuring that the tray along with the transfer material and the transfer copings are devoid of any distortions or any discrepancy and all the vital parameters are captured perfectly, the tray is to be cleaned and disinfected properly before sending it to the Dental Lab for the creating the Prosthesis. In case of any discrepancy is found in the impression, a fresh impression needs to be taken.
